A World Day of Dance Event for dancers age 12 and up will be at the Todd Performing Arts Center at Chesapeake College on Saturday, Nov 2nd between 9am-3pmDancers may arrive for warm up starting at 8AM.

Classes will be taught by Guest Artists:

Rose Xinran Qi – Traditional Chinese Dance: 9AM-10:45AM
Deepti Mukund – South India Dance Form: 11AM-12:45PM
Sylvia Soumah – West African Dance:1PM-2:45PM

Parents and members of the community are invited to attend for free.

Guest Artist Bios for a World Day of Dance

Rose Xinran Qi HeadshotRose Xinran Qi is an independent artist, choreographer, researcher, and educator with over 25 years of professional dance training and broad artistic experience in ballet,contemporary, postmodern, and classical Chinese dance. Rose holds a BFA in dance performance and choreography from ShanXi Academy in China and an MFA in dance from the University of Maryland in the U.S. She has choreographed over 50 dance productions and performed over 200 times while working with companies, organizations, dancers, and artists across many genres.

From 2008 to 2013, Rose performed nationally and internationally with the Huajin Dance Drama Ensemble. Venues included the Sydney Opera House, Kennedy Center Opera House, the China Greater National Theatre, the Great Hall of the People, the Shanghai Greater Theatre, Singapore Kallang Theatre, Hong Kong Tuen Mun Town Hall and many others. The company produced Fruit Under the Great Wall, a Top Ten Dance Drama in China directed by internationally acclaimed Chinese Choreographer Zhang Jigang, and Opera Warriors, winner of a government award for Professional Stage Performing Arts sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and directed by Xing ShiMiao of the Chinese Dancers Association. Rose served as Artistic Director for the Pragenell 2019 Miss Legend global gala and competition held at London’s 02 Vertigo Theater.

As director of RoseQi Dance Arts, Rose’s freelance work credits include choreography, direction, instruction, production, and collaboration for many dance events. She also provided a forum to promote domestic and international cross-cultural exchange and coordinated events for both higher educational institutions and American/Chinese communities. Rose’s choreography and teaching reflect her energy and creativity, and her extensive scholarly research informs her methods for integrating eastern and western dance forms for both stage and classroom.

Deepti Mukund Navile is the Founder & Artistic Director of the Natyabhoomi School of Dance, Maryland, USA established in 1994. Natyabhoomi is the fruit of her passion and dedication and offers quality dance instruction in the Mysore Style of Bharathanatyam while providing cultural education to its students.

The school, under the direction of Deepti, has performed at many prestigious venues all over the US and India including the Strathmore Music Center, Barns at Wolf Trap, Children’s Theater at Wolf Trap, Kennedy Center, Lisner auditorium, Karthik Fine Arts & Brahma Gana Sabha, Chennai, to name a few.

Natyabhoomi has presented unique thematic productions and dance dramas – Surya, Meghdhoot, Andal, Kumara Sambhavam, Geetha Govindam, Ritumala, Ishani, AUM, Rithusamhara. Rasayathi, Rukmini Kalyanam to name a few. Deepti collaborated with Sandra Atkinson of the Light Switch Dance Theater and the famous flautist Deepak Ram to create the ‘The Girl Child Project’ which is an endeavor to promote women empowerment through the Arts. In April 2017, Natyabhoomi dancers presented Geeta Govindam at the 9th American Natya Festival at St. Louis, MO. December 2018 – January 2019, Deepti along with Natyabhoomi Company dancers went on a highly successful performance tour to India.

Natyabhoomi celebrated its Silver Anniversary in 2019 with year long events and performances to celebrate dance and the community they have been part of all these years. The Natyabhoomi Dance Company also toured & performed in India as part of the celebration.

Deepti has guided twenty nine students of Natyabhoomi to perform their Rangapraveshas or formal full length solo dance recitals.

Deepti has been awarded the ‘Natya Kaumudi’ title by Visakha Art & Dance Association, Vizag India, ‘Natya Kalashri’ title by N. Srikanth Natarajan, India & ‘Nritya Rathna’ title by Kuchipudi Dance Academy.

During the pandemic years, Deepti worked tirelessly with many Arts Organizations, in India and the US, and presented many well received Online Live and Recorded performances.

Deepti has created, staged and performed many thematic productions, the proceeds of which have been donated to many charities that help shelter and educate under privileged children.

Deepti is actively involved in making Indian Classical Dance more accessible to mainstream audiences and is focused on educating audiences about India’s rich culture and heritage. Deepti has been the dance chair of the World Kannada Conference in 2006, the Chairperson for the Indian Dance Educators Association from 2012-2014 and Director of Programs on the current board (2019-2021). Deepti has in the past worked closely with the Indian Embassy in Washington DC to help promote Indian Dance.

Deepti taught an introductory class on Indian Dance at the Montgomery Community College, Maryand. Deepti also has conducted Artist Residencies in Bharathanatyam in local High Schools. Deepti’s passion for dance carries through in her work with senior living homes, schools and mental health organizations to help their members through dance therapy and movement.

Apart from dance, Deepti, under the banner of Hasta – The Creative Hand, Deepti creates magic with colors and traditional Indian designs to make one of a kind pieces. Deepti’s pieces are unique hand-created expressions of art in an array of colors & alluring designs in terra cotta, wood, cloth & other materials.

Image of Sylvia SoumahSylvia Soumah is the Founder/Artistic Director of Coyaba Dance Theater ( Since 1997) Coyaba Dance Theater has celebrated over 20 years of portraying outstanding performances in Traditional West African dance and drumming and theater.

Coyaba is a 2001 and 2004 recipient of the DC.Dance Award for outstanding group performance. Coyaba Performed at the Ethiopian Embassy for Micheal Jackson receiving the Humanitarian Award (2004) for his work in africa, Co-Choreographer/Performer with What’s Going On touring company under the direction of Vincent Thomas.

She has studied in Guinea Conakry, with Ls Ballet Africaines, and Senegal under the direction of Bouly Sonko, Artistic Director of the National Ballet of Senegal. Sylvia has performed and studied with Wo’se Dance Theater, Moustapha Bangoura, Mamady Keita, Fadouba O’lare, Mabinity Bangoura, Erika Thimey, Dance Projects (Debra Riley) Carla & Co.

Sylvia is the head of Dance Place African dance Program, Artistic Director/Griot of Dance Africa DC.
