CCF sponsors a World Day of Dance at Chesapeake College featuring West African Dance teacher Sylvia Soumah, Indian Classical dance teacher Deepti Mukund and Classical Chinese dance teacher Rose Xinran Qi

On November 2, 2024, the Carole Cascio Fund held its first-ever World Day of Dance at the Todd Performing Arts Center (TPAC) at Chesapeake College. The day featured instruction in Classical Chinese Dance by Rose Xinran Qi, Classical Indian Dance by Deepti Mukund Navile, and Traditional/Contemporary West African Dance by Sylvia Soumah.

Sylvia Soumah engaged with her West African dance class students.

Rose began the day with a contemporary Chinese ballet class, introducing the dancers to the style of traditional Chinese dance. Her graceful and lyrical phrases captivated the students. Rose also led an informative Q&A session, sharing her personal experiences and how dance has played a role in her life.

Deepti Mukund Navile, Founder and Artistic Director of the Natyabhoomi School of Dance, taught the Classical Indian Dance class. With the help of one of her talented dancers, Deepti taught a traditional dance dating back to the 10th century. The intricate hand and footwork, including rhythmic stomping, fascinated the students. Deepti and her assistant explained how these ancient dances were used to convey stories, leaving a lasting impression on the participants.

Sylvia Soumah, Founder and Artistic Director of Cuiaba Dance Theatre, led the West African Dance class. Accompanied by energetic drumming, Sylvia guided the students through various West African dance steps. The dancers quickly learned a long phrase of traditional movements, displaying confidence and enthusiasm for the vibrant and fun style.

Approximately 30 dancers from eastern shore dance studios, high schools, and colleges participated in the event. Michael Bell, Supervisor for Instruction for Queen Anne’s County Public Schools, was also present. He and Executive Director Peter Pucci discussed the possibility of bringing Sylvia and her drummers to a local high school for Black History Month in February 2025.

Special thanks to Rob Thompson, Director of Programming at TPAC at Chesapeake College, and his crew.
